It’s
always interesting to meet other people who are also passing through.
An
obstetrics intern from Portland, Oregan, USA was doing a 6 week internship in Gondar. He said
that the Doctors really knew their stuff and could quote text books at
him. Also they were excellent on the practical management of
people. He said that the volume of people here meant that he saw in one
week what would take 5 years in the US
and so he was gaining valuable experience in what would be rare cases in the US. The
fact that the doctors was skilful was later disputed by Dawit who suggested
that he was looking through enthusiastic newbie eyes and after a while he would
see the true picture which was the complete opposite.
The
two peace corps teachers, Joel and Christine who were going to teach in Axum for 2 years.
Sheila
Shalhevet who is a board member of a charity called ‘Save a child’s heart’
which takes children with a heart condition to Israel where they are operated on
and cared for. They also support the child in education so that they can
make a difference. They are not just put back where they come from.
I like this, It’s like these children would be dead without the help of
the charity and so it’s like theywould be dead but now not only are they alive,
they are making a significant contribution to their community as doctors and
vets. It is a beautiful symmetry when
you think about it.
